Whew! So much has happened. We celebrated our All School Birthday, attended Field Day down on the farm, our fourth grade class has graduated and we attended school for the last time at 300 East Main Street. Our next class will be in the building located at 501 Reichelderfer Road. Here are some snapshots of life around Cridersville in the past few months.

The carnival turned out to be a big success. It was great to see Cridersville alumni return and help out for the evening. Thank you to all who donated pies, helped run a game, or came to enjoy the evening.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped out with the carnival. Whether you helped run a game or donated an item for the cake wheel, it was greatly appreciated. All monies raised at the carnival will be used for the students at Cridersville, and will help pay for up coming field trips and next weeks COSI on wheels.
Although, this was the last carnival of the current building, we are greatly looking forward to be in the new building this next school year.

Cridersville celebrated Spirit Week in March. We had our Spring Book Fair this week as well as hat day, crazy hair day, mismatched clothes day and more. A big shout out to our guidance counselor, Mr. Searcy, for raising money so that every student was able to get a free, yes, FREE book at the Book Fair.

What’s it like to be the child of a busy parent leader? And just what do kids think about having mom or dad (or both) at school 24/7? We asked children of PTO leaders for their views. Here’s what they had to say about their parents’ roles as leaders at school.

Kyle Chirsky
Grade 3, son of Lisa Chirsky, Recording Secretary, Mohegan School PTO, Shelton, Conn.
What Mom does: Brings snacks and fun things to school, she cleans the chickens in my class and brings them home.
Coolest thing she’s done: She brought in quarters for [a] project and gave one to all the kids to keep.
At meetings: My mom talks a lot, so I am sure she talks all night.
PTO perk: When my mom comes to school; it means that something cool is going on and we don’t have to do work.
PTO pet peeve: When my mom does the school handbook and newsletter...she hogs the computer and makes me use the old one that is as big as a dinosaur and as slow as one, too!Future involvement plans: To be in control of all the money. I would buy toys and learning games and have parties.

Christina Chirsky
Kindergarten, sister of Kyle and daughter of Lisa Chirsky, Mohegan School PTO, Shelton, Conn.
What Mom does: My mom tells the teachers what to do.
Coolest thing she’s done: My mom dressed up for the Easter Bunny because he couldn’t make it to school; she gave eggs to all the kids. I told all my friends that my mom is the Easter Bunny’s helper.
At meetings: The moms make money at the PTO meetings—real money.
PTO perk: I like when my mom volunteers because I go into the office and get candy and pretzels.
PTO pet peeve: When my mom comes to school because she picks me up and I can’t play after school with my friends.Future involvement plans: I don’t want to be involved at school because I will be working.

Carter Lochbaum
Grade 5, son of Angie Lochbaum, President, Zane Trace Elementary Pioneer Parent Club, Chillicothe, Ohio
What Mom does: Just about anything—helps out a lot at the school, the fundraisers, fun nights, and she works a lot of market days.
Coolest thing she’s done: Penny drive for Red Cross, then they gave the winning class a pizza party.
PTO perk: Everyone knows my mom.
PTO pet peeve: Sometimes my mom knows what I have done before I get home...good or bad.
Future involvement plans: Help like my mom and dad do—and do just as much as they do...help with back-to-school night and field trips.

Lauren Bernstein
Grade 2, daughter of Phil Bernstein, Copresident and former Treasurer, Douglas MacArthur Elementary PTO, Waltham, Mass.
What Dad does: Buys the equipment for the kids to play outside and buys the teachers pencils, papers, and pens.
Coolest thing he’s done: He went to Plum Island [wildlife refuge] with us as a chaperone.
At meetings: They talk about how to keep the kids safe and how to make sure we use the recess equipment safely.
PTO perk: Too many things to say.
PTO pet peeve: None. I like to see my dad because I love him.
Future involvement plans: Help to make kids have fun while learning and every day when they are doing something bad have them tell yourself.

Lexi Fowee
Grade 4, daughter of Julie Fowee, former PTO president, A.M. Yealey Elementary PTO, Florence, Ky.
What Mom does: Mom does a lot of things. Dad helps, too.
Coolest thing she’s done: Mom did the Halloween party, and that was fun.
At meetings: They talk about school, they talk about budget, and they do all that stuff.
PTO perk: Mom and Dad were in charge of the talent show at school one year. They ran the show and fixed things. It was a neat show.
PTO pet peeve: Too much time at meetings. I am glad that she is not the president anymore.
Future involvement plans: I wouldn’t want to be president because the president has too much to do.

Isabella Kallfelz
Grade 4 at Heron Pond School, daughter of Elizabeth Kallfelz, Vice President, Milford Elementary School PTO, Milford, N.H.
What Mom does: Buys popsicles and makes our school better by running family nights where we have hot dogs.

Larry Riley
Grade 5, son of Traci Riley, Copresident, North Side Elementary PTO, Union City, Ind.
At meetings: They spend too much time. They discuss what happens at school.

Homeroom Valentine's Day parties were held on February 12. There were some really amazing collection boxes this year. Jessica from Mrs. Stedke's class, above, made her collection box look like our school! Xavier, below, from Mrs. Baker's class, made an incredible football field.

The PTO sponsored the February skating party this past Monday. Even with the weather that was to start later that night, we had a great turn out. Our students are always well behaved and courteous. Thanks! You can see Mr. Tester dancing the Chicken Dance with our students, too.

Each month, if students are on green for the entire month, they earn the status of being on the green team. Each homeroom green team gets their photo taken which is then proudly displayed at school. Teachers keep green bandannas for the green team members to wear on a specified day. Here are two fourth graders who wore their green team bandannas proudly.. and then some first graders who also wore theirs proudly.

Action for Healthy Kids

"School Wellness" is a term that every parent needs to know. School wellness impacts children's performance in the classroom and influences their lifelong habits of healthful eating and active living. School wellness encompasses healthy eating, adequate physical activity, nutrition education and physical education for all students. Improving school wellness practices is essential to decreasing childhood obesity and preparing children to live healthy, active and productive lives.

Some known facts:

Healthy children learn better.
The voice of the parent can change schools.
Without parental involvement, school wellness initiatives simply cannot succeed.

The Cridersville PTO would like you to know we try our best to provide those extras to students that also promote healthy students. Please visit Action for Healthy Kids to learn more. It is a national nonprofit organization that addresses the epidemic of overweight, undernourished and sedentary youth by focusing on nutrition and physical activity policies and practices in schools.

Action for Healthy Kids was founded in 2002 by former US Surgeon General David Satcher, in response to the Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity, which identified the school environment as one of five key sites of change.

So much to catch up on! We participated in the Halloween parade in Wapak this year. We, as the PTO, had talked about it in years past but for some reason, just never signed up. This year we did. Our school's theme is Reach For The Stars so we made our float around this theme. We have gold star costumes from last year's parade in Cridersville and some students wore these. PTO members donated their vehicle and trailer, as well as straw for the float. Another member had a giant star that was still wrapped in red and white garland from last year and we added that. We passed out bookmarks, informational papers and candy while walking the parade. What better way to create camaraderie within the school district than to participate in neighboring communities events!

We also participated in the Cridersville Halloween parade. We had a different float with the theme of Fishing for a Good Book. A PTO member donated their pontoon boat for our float and we again passed out bookmarks, informational papers and candy. We also had our gold stars walking with us.

Our first skating party was held on Monday, October 12. The PTO sponsors skating parties once a month at Edgewood Skate Arena. Students have the option of riding a bus from Cridersville School to Edgewood and home again.

Thanks, parents, staff and students for making Cridersville School a great place for a good start!

Tomorrow night is Cridersville Elementary Open House. The PTO would like to recognize and thank the 68, yes, 68 parents who turned in the Three for Me promise. We began this volunteer program last year and it had a great turn out then. I am so happy to see so many of our parents promise to give three hours to their children this school year. Parental involvement is critical to student success.

Once in a while, the staff is granted the honor of being able to tour the new school building while it is still under construction. This afternoon, the staff took one tour and members of the PTO followed in another tour. Below are some photos from the amazing adventure...

Below you will see the lunch room. The windows in the cafeteria face north and bring a lot of sunshine to the room. It will be a welcome change to the sometimes crowded stage that now is the place our students eat lunch.

This is a look down the south hallway, looking east to west.

The gentleman from Gilbane who conducted our tour is explaining the purpose behind the slanted ceilings...the large windows allow for light to come into the classrooms which then will be reflected by the slanted ceiling, allowing for sunlight to be utilized in each classroom.

Below is a peek at what will be the media center. The windows face west and look out at Otterbein. Mrs. Jackson will have more room so she can fill it with even more wonderful books for you to read!

A look at our gymnasium and stage is below. Mrs. Black thinks she has a great gym now, wait until you attend your physical education classes in THIS gym!

The staff and members of the Cridersville PTO would like to thank Gilbane for sharing their time with us. We appreciate the job you are doing for our new schools buildings!

The first day of school always brings something entertaining to Cridersville School. Today we had guest visitors of Respect, Responsibility and Raven Recycle. All staff and students were given 3D glasses, too. You can see that our principal, Mr. Tester, jumped right into the fun by wearing his glasses.

Respect, below, talked about what it means to be respectful not only of ourselves, but of our belongings as well as those things that belong to others. Respect talked about taking our words with us everyday. She emphasized how important it is to use the words, Excuse me, please. Before you know it, it will be habit and then we won't even have to think about it!

Responsibility talked about being a star student and what responsibility really means. She talked about being responsible for our things...our library books, our homework, our school supplies, and our manners. Responsibility stressed that school is our job and we must take it seriously.

Finally, Raven Recycle, below, talked about the recycling that is done at Cridersville School. When we recycle, we are being both respectful and responsible. We need to take care of our planet and our surroundings.

The first day of school also brings all students and staff outside to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

As we get set to begin yet another school year, let us remind ourselves how important it is to monitor our children's activity on the internet. Monitoring the appropriateness of websites (and who they communicate with) has never been more important. The following information, developed by the safety experts at McAfee, provides tips to help keep them safe online.

Talk with them about what they do online. Check out their social websites (and any personal profiles they’ve posted)—and set up your own account and profile on those sites. Also, familiarize yourself with the latest Internet trends.

Establish clear ground rules. Limit the amount of them they’re allowed to spend online. Discuss what should never be shared with others: passwords, phone numbers, full names, addresses, where they go to school, etc.

Keep tabs on their online messages. Make sure their communications are appropriate, including instant messages, e-mail, and e-mail attachments.

Encourage your child to ask for help. Tell them to trust their instinct if anything seems “off” (inappropriate photos, being bullied, or someone asking to meet offline)—and to let you know immediately.

Stress that nothing on the Internet is ever private. Whatever they post online is out there for anyone to see (even on a page labeled “private”). Even something e-mailed to one person can then be forwarded to thousands more.

Girls Basketball Makes Final Four!

Today at Cridersville, a pep rally was held to cheer our Lady Redskins on to victory. Our girls have made it to the final four in the state! They play on Friday, March 20 in Columbus. Mr. Searcy, our guidance counselor, wore traditional redskin attire and helped to get our students excited. The team came to our school and we hopefully, cheered them on to keep them in the spirit of winning.

No matter what happens Friday, our Lady Redskins should BE PROUD.

It was also St. Patrick's Day today and some of our staff wore green mixed in with all of the red for the team. Go Redskins and Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Valentine Parties

Homerooms celebrated Valentine's Day with parties on February 13th. I find it amazing how many creative valentine boxes I find every year!! Below are some of my favorites and even one amazing cookie that served two purposes: the craft project and the treat.

Thanks to so many parents and relatives of Cridersville kids who help out at our parties. The kids really look forward to the parties and your time and donations mean the world to them!

Green Team Assembly

The elementary schools reward students that stay on green all month with different activities. Sometimes students get an extra recess, maybe a movie and sometimes they get to attend an entire assembly in their honor. Centennial Elementary School held a Green Team Assembly on Friday, February 6. This month they invited Cridersville Elementary School's Jump Rope Club to show off some of their jump rope tricks for the kids at Centennial. Mrs. Black and Mrs. Hilty chose some of the kids who know most of the tricks very well.

February Skating Party

The PTO sponsored the February skating party at Edgewood Skate Arena on Monday, February 9. The PTO began to sponsor skating parties a long time ago and at one time, our students went to the Dixie Roller Arena on Dixie Highway. Many middle school students return and go skating with their younger siblings who still attend Cridersville. Thank you to parents who volunteer to ride the bus! Thanks also to those parents who drive their kids to the skate arena and help our students putting on and taking off their skates.

January Board Meeting

The January Board of Education Meeting was held at Cridersville on Tuesday, January 27. A few students were recognized by their nominating teachers. Lauren Snider receives her awards from Board Member Pat Gibson.

Below, Mrs. Doll shares the reasons why she chose Eva Williams to receive the recognition.

Another student, Jessica Converse, receives her award from nominating teacher, Mrs. Rees.

Two long time volunteers were also recognized. Ms. Irene Cole and Ms. Deb Stroh were honored for their long time commitment and time they spend volunteering at our school. Miss Cole works with Ms. Schlenker in a kindergarten room and Ms. Stroh works with Ms. Bailey's second grade class.

Remember when the site was just a grass field?

It now has a fence up to keep curious onlookers out of the area and safe.

The photo below was taken from the entrance to Otterbein. I chatted with one of the workers out there tending to the fence...I asked him how it was working out there in this cold weather. His simple response was this: "It is really cold." I sort of laughed and said to him: "Well, on behalf of the Cridersville School Community, we want to say thanks! This was once just a field and soon it will be the home of our new school." I was excited when talking about it and he may have thought I was a bit crazy for being out there in the frigid temps to take photos, but sometimes I just can't help myself.

If you haven't been down Reichelderfer Road lately, take a drive down there. And if you happen to be close enough to one of the many construction workers, please be sure to let them know that we appreciate their work.

Welcome to 2009!

On Friday, January 9, students enjoyed their Holiday Parties that were supposed to be on the last day of school before the break. Since school was cancelled due to snow, so were the parties. The kids at Cridersville had fun playing bingo, playing hot potato, listening to stories from the left and right (hi, Mrs. Doll's class!) and so much more.

The PTO would like to thank parents for donating their time and talents for the students at Cridersville. We wouldn't be able to do it without you!

The PTO likes to reward hard work....not only do students earn rewards from our fundraising company but they also earn rewards from the PTO. The students selling at least 30 items went to Pizza Hut in Wapak in a limo! They each enjoyed lunch and a ride in a limousine, too.

When we returned to school, a prize assembly was held in the gym. Students selling at least 20 items participated in a hacky sack game. But the icing on the cake, oh, eh hum, PIE, was when the top seller from each grade creamed a staff member in the face with a pie.

Holiday Sports Spectacular!

Three years ago, the PTO was a bit short on funds. We had always brought in a special assembly for the kids to enjoy right before the holiday break. We still wanted to do something for the kids but we just did not have the money to do it. After some brainstorming, we asked our Physical Education teacher, Mrs. Black, to help us with something for the kids during their phys ed time. Holiday Sports Spectacular was born! Mrs. Black transformed our gym into a winter wonderland. She created a snowbank fit for snowball fights, a hockey game, toboggan riding and cross country skiing. With the help of yarn balls, a six sided hockey rink, scooters and buddy walkers, our wonderland arrived. Students enjoy it each year the last week of school before holiday break. Cridersville students have been busy! We will write a quick post to try and catch up. Let's see, we have had the Santa Store, are in the middle of Holiday Sports Spectacular and still have four more days of school until holiday break!

Students that sold at least 30 items in the fall PTO fundraiser will be going to the Pizza Hut in Wapak in a limo! They will enjoy the limo ride there and back and enjoy lunch in between. Congratulations to the following students that earned the limo lunch: Trinity Tomsett, Logan Bunger, Derek Brockert, Kimberly Rose, Hannah Laise, Emma Davis, Shawn Knupp, Seth Leek, Landon Lightle, Katie Pleiman and Caitlin Duff.

The PTO will also hold the Prize Assembly on Thursday at 1:30. Students will be awarded their prizes earned from the fundraiser. The top seller in each grade will also get to cream a staff member in the face with a pie. The top sellers were Trinity Tomsett in kindergarten, Derek Brockert in first grade, Kimberly Rose in second grade, Landon Lightle in third grade and Caitlin Duff in fourth grade. Trinity was also the top seller in the entire school. Congratulations to these students!! Be sure to check back as photos will be posted after the assembly.

Be a Book Day will held Friday morning. Students will have the opportunity to visit several staff members reading a book dressed as the book character.

I am trying to take photos periodically of the future site of our new school. The first photo is taken from a vantage point that I am going to take a photo from often, to document the progress. The hopes are so that we can see it grow from the field it once was to the incredible school it will be.

This next photo, the last of three, is of the area just beyond the entrance to Otterbein. They have a dirt road from the site, through the trees, over to the adjacent property. I think the dirt there was moved from the building site. We shall have to see the process as it moves along. Be sure to come back to see any growth. I will be tagging all of the posts related to the new building as "new beginning".

Halloween Parade

For the past few years, the Cridersville PTO and school have sponsored a float in the annual Cridersville Halloween Parade. This year's theme of Reach For The Stars was the idea behind our float. If you remember from an earlier post, the first day of school brought us Mission Control. Some of our staff reminded students of the importance of respect, responsibility and doing our best all of the time. We tried to recreate this on our float this year.

In keeping with our theme, we had students walk as our "STARS".

Red Ribbon Week

We kicked off Red Ribbon Week with an assembly from Red Grammer. He is an accomplished muscian whose album, "Be Bop Your Best" is a collection of smart and delightful songs about truthfulness, resposibility, kindness, fairness, integrity and citizenship. Red Ribbon Week history~

Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation reaching millions of Americans during the last week of October every year. By wearing red ribbons and participating in community anti-drug events, young people pledge to live a drug-free life and pay tribute to DEA Special Agent Enriqué “Kiki” Camarena.

Special Agent Kiki Camarena:
Special Agent Camarena was an 11-year veteran of the DEA assigned to the Guadalajara, Mexico, office where he was on the trail of the country’s biggest marijuana and cocaine traffickers. In 1985, he was extremely close to unlocking a multi-billion dollar drug pipeline.
On February 7, 1985, he was kidnapped, brutally tortured, and murdered by Mexican drug traffickers. His tragic death opened the eyes of many Americans to the dangers of drugs and the international scope of the drug trade.

History of Red Ribbon Week:
Shortly after Kiki’s death, Congressman Duncan Hunter and Kiki’s high school friend Henry Lozano launched “Camarena Clubs” in Kiki’s hometown of Calexico, California. Hundreds of club members pledged to lead drug-free lives to honor the sacrifice made by Kiki Camarena.
These pledges were delivered to First Lady Nancy Reagan at a national conference of parents combating youth drug use. Several state parent organizations then called on community groups to wear red ribbons during the last week of October as a symbol of their drug-free commitment.
The first Red Ribbon Week celebrations were held in La Mirada and Norwalk, California. In 1988, the National Family Partnership (NFP) coordinated the first National Red Ribbon Week with President and Mrs. Reagan serving as honorary chairpersons.

How to Celebrate Red Ribbon Week:
The NFP estimates that more than 80 million people participate in Red Ribbon events each year. The campaign is a unified way for communities to take a stand against drugs and show intolerance for illicit drug use and the consequences to all Americans. Schools, businesses, the faith community, media, families, and community coalitions join together to celebrate Red Ribbon Week in many ways, such as: sponsoring essay and poster contests; organizing drug-free races; decorating buildings in red; handing out red ribbons to customers; holding parades or community events; and by publicizing the value of a drug-free, healthy lifestyle. DEA joins with community coalitions and prevention groups to plan and carry out Red Ribbon activities, ranging from classroom events to stadium-sized rallies.

Three For Me

The PTO started a new volunteer program this school year called Three For Me. The basic idea is to have every parent promise to volunteer three hours to their child's school this year. Since the program has started, we have had 84 names logged in the office on the sign in sheet. We would like to list all of the parents or grandparents who have already volunteered their time to their child, our school. Groundbreaking

Cridersville Elementary, as well as the site for the new elementary school in Wapak, held Groundbreaking Ceremonies on Wednesday, September 24. The students of Cridersville were bussed to the site of the new school and festivities were conducted by our principal, Mr. Tester, and by our superintendent, Mr. Horner. The high school marching band was there, too, as well as many parents and community members.

Open House & Book Fair

The Fall Fundraiser kickoff assembly was held Tuesday at school. The PTO is again offering the extra incentive of being able to cream a staff member with a pie to the top seller in each grade. In order to fully understand what that means, Mrs. Laise, our PTO president, volunteered to be creamed in the face with a pie by Mr. Tester. As the picture shows and for those of you who were there, we think he enjoyed this entirely too much.

The Book Fair was also kicked off at Open House which was held Tuesday evening. Students have had the opportunity to shop for books on Wednesday and Thursday. The PTO would like to extend a thank you to those who have purchased books and supported the PTO.

The first skating party was held on Monday, September 8th at Edgewood Skating Rink in Lima. There was a great turn out of students. Thanks to Mrs. Black and to our parent volunteers who chaperoned the bus and spent the evening having fun with Cridersville kids.

Okay, now Cenntenial has done it! The Cridersville PTO president's house has been flocked! Can you believe it? I heard they opened their windows, had the garage doors open and still missed it. Actually, when I talked with the current pres, she said she thought she heard someone on the front porch...but thought, no, someone wouldn't be up there this time of night. Apparently she was wrong! The front yard is covered in a sea of pink.

The secret PTO photographer was able to capture these nighttime shots but will be out again tomorrow to record the flocking with photos taken in daylight. Be sure to come back to see the daytime photos added to this post.

Our school was flocked last night. The front lawn had pink flamingos on it this morning when staff and students arrived. One of the other district elementaries must be raising money for the Ronald MacDonald House...the pink guys will stay there for a few days and then someone from Centennial will return to move them to another location. If you are flocked, then you donate funds to the charity and can even pay to NOT be flocked again. For a small donation, you can also find out who it is that flocked you....

First Day of School

The first day of school, hard to believe it is here! We had a welcoming assembly this morning and then all students and staff went outside to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. It was a great morning! Pictured below are our three KG teachers...Miss Rineharet, Ms. Schlenker and Mrs. Shenk.
The theme of the assembly was a "star" mission....we had some of our staff 'travel' into outer space to bring back messages of respect, responsibility and doing our best. Great job to space Commander Jackson, Lts. Hilty, Bush and Hadding.

The PTO hosted it's annual school carnival on Friday, April 18th. The carnival was held from 6 until 8:30 PM. There were games and food as well as a huge raffle . On Saturday, April 5, the PTO worked the Cridersville area recycle in Tower Park. The weather was much nicer than last year when we worked...we had many people come and help. During the last week of school before the holiday break, all classes got to enjoy holiday music while having snowball fights using yarn balls, playing hockey, cross country skiing and pretending scooters were toboggans. All of the 4th grade classes took a field trip to the Neil Armstrong Museum. They spent the day learning about space and the history of man made trips to the moon. Mrs. Katterheinrich's class was the last of the three classes to go to the museum. Thank you to those of you who supported the bond issue last Tuesday!! The bond issue passed and our district will receive $31.6 million from the state to renovate and rebuild our district's schools. We had a float in Monday's Halloween parade and waited anxiously Tuesday evening for the results. Rodeo Day, Harvest Parties and Halloween Parade

Yes, readers, it has been some time. PTO members have been busy helping out with Rodeo Day, which was held on Friday, October 19, the Harvest Parties, which were held on Friday, October 26 and the Cridersville Halloween Parade which was on Monday, October 29. Whew! Here are some photos from each event as well as a video or two. I will have to see what I've got and go from there.

For the parade, the PTO and staff of Cridersville entered two floats. The first was themed Reach for the Stars, which is our school theme this year. The other float was for B.E.S.T., Building Excellent Schools Today. This year we had about 33 students, 20 parents and 16 staff, as well as members of Singsation and district administration walk in the parade. The PTO would like to thank everyone who joined us in the parade, donated candy or time for the floats. The PTO would also like to thank the parents who donated their trailers for us to use.

Book Drive

The PTO recently held a gently used book drive. In addition to the book drive, PTO purchased $100 of books to be donated to a school in need. The school that we chose was Sts. Peter and Paul in Ottawa. Their school was severely damaged in the recent flooding. They are currently attending school with the students of Ottawa Elementary. Mrs. Green and Mrs. Laise went to Ottawa Elementary to deliver the books that were collected for the students in need. Thank you to everyone who donated books for the students in Ottawa.

The KG, first and second grades visited the Cridersville Fire Station on Monday. Students learned about fire safety as well as what firemen look like when they have all of their gear on. Students know not to hide from fireman if they are in a fire. Safety precautions that can be taken at home were also discussed. The students were lucky enough to experience what it feels like to hold a fire hose with the help of one of the firemen.

194 Schools of Promise Recognized

Columbus – From Appalachia to the inner cities, the number of Ohio schools with more than 40 percent poverty that met or exceeded state standards in reading or mathematics for all groups of children went from 117 in 2006 to 194 in 2007. Susan Tave Zelman, superintendent of public instruction, today sent letters of recognition to each of the school’s principals, who also will receive a banner later this month. “At a time when schools are being held more accountable for all groups of children, both statewide and at the federal level, these Schools of Promise are solid evidence that students from low-income communities can beat the odds. They provide hope and promise to students and teachers in all Ohio schools,” said Zelman.

After reading some of the posted comments and listening to fellow community members, I encourage all of you to visit this site: www.bestwapakschools.com. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, please visit this site and read about the issue. The money from the state is not recycled tax money, but rather money from the tobacco settlement. This is money we will NOT have to pay back. All three of our elementary schools went through a 24 item Ohio School Facilities Commission Assessment Evaluation. All three of our elementary schools failed. If the cost to renovate a building is more than two-thirds, or 67%, of what it would cost to build new, the state calls for the district to build new. In order to have the state as a partner and receive state funds, the district has to follow the state guidelines.

Cridersville School was built in 1939, with additions in 1954 and 1958. Cenntennial was built in 1948 and received changes in 1962 and 1990. Northridge was built in 1967. Even since the newest building, Northridge, was constructed, so much has changed as to what is needed to shape future education facilities. These needs include security, learning spaces, technology, community accessibility, sustainability, functionality, adaptive usability, flexibility, indoor environmental quality and school size.

Whew! We made it through the first week of school. The kindergartners are really starting their first full week today, but nonetheless, we have made it.

As the temperatures remain warm, the students seem to be in great spirits. Even though some students complain about having to leave their summer vacation behind, everyone is happy to be back with their friends. Classmates have changed, your teacher is different but the spirit of Cridersville School is in full swing.

Why PTOs Are Important

Joining the PTO is a great way to learn about your child's school and to meet other parents. But being an active member does so much more. Decades of studies have shown that children whose parents are involved in their education have higher grades and are more likely to graduate than those whose parents aren't involved. They have better attendance, are more motivated, have higher self-esteem and are less likely to use drugs and alcohol or engage in violent behavior. When it comes to academic achievement, parent involvement is more critical than income, education level or cultural background.

There's a payoff for parents and schools, too. Involved parents tend to feel self-confident and in control. They meet new people, which strengthens and expands their social networks. They become better educated about child development and they tend to have positive rapport with the school. Teacher morale increases and schools become stronger.

Being involved with your child's education doesn't begin and end in the school, of course. Parents need to show interest in their children's learning, read to them and help with homework. But there's something about going into the classroom to help the teacher, or making posters for Science Night, or volunteering to help at the Santa Store, Book Fairs or Carnival that tightens the relationship between home and school for everyone--parents, children and teachers. When enough parents join the PTO and put their collective creativity, talents, skills and resources toward the same objective, they're capable of just about anything. Starting with nothing, PTOs can create carnivals and family nights, conjure programs and performances and buy equipment and supplies that make teaching easier or more interesting and school more fun. PTOs help kids pay for field trips and throw their organizing power behind campaigns to support our districts' schools. Being involved in your child's PTO can be an experience of a lifetime.

The week of May 7-11 is Teacher and Staff Appreciation week. The PTO would like to say thanks to all of the teachers and staff for everything you do for our children, the students, of Cridersville Elementary School.

I have posted a video that was sung by Mrs. Katterheinrich's fourth grade class. They were in music class working on this song. A student named Courtney came and found me, a member of PTO and substitute teacher in the building, and asked if they could sing this song for me. I would like to personally thank the students of Mrs. K's class for thinking of me and making my day! However, I am sharing this with all the teachers and staff so that they all know that they are appreciated. Thanks for all you do!

Mrs. Black is taking all of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders on a field trip to Astro Lanes. Bowling is one of the activities taught in Physical Education. Not only is bowling a lifelong sport, it also involves math skills and social interaction. Some classes go bowling Monday and the remaining classes go on Wednesday. COSI

On Tuesday, May 5th, COSI on Wheels came to our school. The theme this year was Agricultural Adventures. The students enjoyed milking Daisy the cow, planting "seeds", testing the pH of different soils, grinding wheat into flour, checking out farm animal organs, sorting food into the different food groups, managing a farm and so much more.

Mrs. Shenk, Ms. Schlenker and Mrs. Baker took their classes to Kendricks Woods on May 4th to spend some time taking in nature. Guided tours were given to all of the students. They were able to try their luck at catching something in the pond as well as enjoy their lunches outside. After leaving Kendricks Woods, they ventured to Dairy Queen to eat some ice cream. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who went with the students on their field trip.

3rd grade Columbus Zoo trip

The third graders went to the Columbus Zoo on Friday, April 27th. The weather wasn't the greatest but at least it did not rain all day. There are many great animals to see there and not enough time! You can click on the PTO photo page to see all of the photos taken at the zoo.

PTO Carnival

The annual PTO Carnival was held on Friday April 20th. We are glad that so many of you came back to school to join us in the fun! We had a great turn out for the games and crafts. The obstacle course was a big hit again this year, too. Be sure to look at all the pictures by clicking on the link for PTO photo page.

We would like to say a big THANKS to all of the teachers, staff and parents who helped us this year. Our carnival couldn't be a success if all of you did not help us. Thank you, too, to all of you who donated baked goods for the cake walk. It was a big hit again this year.

Mr. Tester teaching 3rd grade

Today Mr. Tester ventured into a third grade classroom to teach Mrs. Eley's class. Mrs. Eley's class was one of the top two "green" classes during Spirit Week. The PTO would like to thank the teachers and staff for the continued encouragement of our students to be on their best green behavior. And to Mr. Tester -- a HUGE thanks for stepping into some of the classrooms and teaching our students here at Cridersville.

During Spirit Week in March, the students of Cridersville were challenged to stay on green all week. The PTO announced a contest that the top two classrooms with the highest percentage of students staying on green would be awarded with a guest teacher. Mr. Tester agreed to be the guest teacher. We would like to congratulate Mrs. Baker's and Mrs. Eley's classes for having the highest percentage of "green" students.

Mr. Tester taught class in Mrs. Baker's pre-1 classroom this morning. Mrs. Eley's third grade class will be having Mr. Tester come in and teach sometime soon. Be sure to check back for a class picture of Mr. Tester and Mrs. Eley's class.

Boot Camp Day Two & Spring Parties

Wow, today was a busy day at Cridersville Elementary. We had Day Two of our Boot Camp today. The remaining Phys Ed classes were able to learn from SFC Arnett about the importance of physical fitness. Today was also the last day of school before Spring Break. Many parents, grandparents and other family came into school to lead the students in fun activities to celebrate spring. (Even though we might not recognize it today with these cold temperatures!)

The PTO would like to extend a big Hooyah! to our Army National Guardsmen who came to our school to help our students.

The PTO would also like to thank all volunteers who came and celebrated spring with the kids at Cridersville. We hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday weekend.

Boot Camp

On Monday, April 2, SFC Arnett from Team #22 of Findlay came to Cridersville School to help Mrs. Black stress the importance of physical fitness and exercise. There were three stations for the students to enjoy. As you can see from one of the videos below, the basketball one was a favorite for both students and staff. The kids learned a new word, uh yah! They were encouraged to say this when they made a shot at the football throw. Spirit Week

March 12-16 is Spirit Week. Each class received a different color shirt and we just had to get a photo! Mr. Tester and Mr. Sawmiller climbed up on the roof and got some great shots. Some of the activities planned by Mr. Searcy include:

-be extra nice to cooks and custodians day

-help fight cancer day

-donate clothing day

-be extra nice to teachers and staff day

Book Fair

On Thursday and Friday, March 8 and 9, the PTO held the Spring Book Fair. As each class arrived to look at and purchase books, we entered each student's name in a drawing for a free book. One child from each class won a book of their choice.

The students seem to enjoy looking for a favorite story or being surprised when they find something new to read. The PTO holds two Book Fairs each school year.

Every school year, the PTO sets goals that we would like to achieve by the end of the year. This year, we set two goals. Our first goal is to replace the old banquet tables that have been used by staff and organizations in the gym as well as throughout the building. They are very heavy and have certainly gotten their use. As of today, we have purchased 12 new tables and hope to replace the remaining ones before the end of the school year.

Our second goal was to replace the old and heavy podium. We were fortunate to have the Grandfather of a first grader make one for us. We would like to extend a huge Thank You to Mr. Atha for a wonderful podium that will be used for many years.

Homeroom Valentine Parties

Homerooms celebrated Valentine's Day today by having parties. Students made their own boxes to collect their valentines. Here are just a few.

Shelby made a Cridersville School box.

Ashton made a covered wagon to take his valentines home in.

Corey collected his cards in a toilet!

Mrs. Anderson's class got together for a photo before playing a game using balloons.

Recycle Day

On Saturday, February 3, the PTO worked the Cridersville area recycle. The recycle center is located in Tower Park. It just so happened that a cold front pushed through about the same time which made for a very cold morning. I believe the temperature was about 5*. PTO members, their families and Mr. Tester braved the cold and we got through the morning.

Some of us were able to escape the bitter winds by working inside the recycled paper truck. Others, however, weren't so lucky.

A big thanks to everyone who helped out at Recycle Day.
